Neonatology

Neonatology is a paediatric subspecialty that focuses on the medical care of newborn babies, especially those that are unwell or preterm. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is generally practised in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Premature babies, low birth weight babies, intrauterine growth restriction babies, congenital malformations (birth defects), infections, pulmonary hypoplasia babies, and birth asphyxia babies are the main patients of neonatologists.
