Gynaecological Oncology deals with the treatment of individuals with cancer or suspected cancer of the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, peritoneum, uterine cervix or body (endometrium or myometrium - sarcomas), vagina, and vulva.
Effective Management through multi-disciplinary team (Tumour Board):
Gynecological cancer must be diagnosed at the Institute if it hasn't already been, and it must also be treated. Histology, clinical examination and the history all contribute to the diagnosis. Investigations continue to be necessary including blood tests, abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, colposcopies (examinations of the cervix), diagnostic hysteroscopies, exploratory laparoscopies, etc.The need for these tests depends on the results of clinical examination, laboratory tests and the type of tumour suspected. To be sure of a diagnosis of a malignant lesion, it is essential to have histological confirmation.
Management involves doctors from various specialties: medical oncologists, surgeons, radiotherapist/oncologists, radiologists and onco pathologists, collaborating with each other. A multidisciplinary opinion is obtained for any major decision.
